This 10-storey mixed-use proposal responded to an invited design competition for a site on Queen Street East. The scheme includes at-grade retail uses, 6 hotel suites, and the renovation of the Berekeley Field House event space housed in a converted church, built originally in 1871. The new construction is separated from the heritage church by a public outdoor event space, cutting through the centre of the site. The hotel floor is connected to the upper mezzanine of the event space via a glass bridge, animating the public space below. The new building is composed of two forms, the first in black metal and the second in red metal. The lower form, matching the height of the existing event space, responds to the Queen Street frontage. The second volume, above the church and adjacent street frontage, steps back and extends over the church. The extended volume is supported by a glass-clad exit stair that anchors the event space below.
